As part of our ongoing commitment to social value, employees from our Cambridge office took part in a conservation volunteering day on 2nd October, working alongside our client Cambridge City Council’s Community Engagement Team at the Ascension Burial Ground on All Souls Lane.
The historic cemetery is one of the most biodiverse sites in Cambridge and the final resting place of around 50 people featured in the Oxford Dictionary of Biography. Like many heritage sites, it requires management to protect both its ecology and its history.
Over the course of the morning, our team helped with a range of conservation tasks, including cutting back overgrowth, clearing graves, renovating benches and railings, litter picking, and creating new habitats for birds, amphibians and reptiles.
The council team were pleased with how much was achieved in a single morning, and the day ended with a guided tour of the burial ground, taking in the graves of some of the Nobel Prize winners laid to rest there. Everyone who took part really enjoyed the day and came away with a better understanding of the site’s significance.
Supporting Our Social Value Pillars
The day reflected two of our three social value pillars: protecting the environment, and valuing people and communities. It formed part of a wider programme of initiatives our teams take part in throughout the year, working alongside local organisations to make a practical difference in the areas where we operate.
We thank Cambridge City Council for the opportunity to take part and look forward to more days like this one.
