What is Drone Surveying?

Using high-resolution imagery and video footage, drones can capture detailed information on roofs, chimneys, façades, gutters and other elevated structures. This enables surveyors to identify defects such as cracked masonry, damaged roof coverings, deteriorating pointing and signs of water ingress before they develop into more significant and costly issues.

Legal and regulatory requirements
Drone surveying in the UK is governed by aviation legislation and regulatory guidance set by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The framework includes the Air Navigation Order 2016, the Civil Aviation Act 1982 and the CAA’s Drone Code.
Recent regulatory updates have introduced enhanced requirements, including mandatory Flyer and Operator ID registration and updated classification systems.
In addition, the Building Safety Act 2022 reinforces the importance of accurate building information and effective risk management, supporting the use of technologies such as drone surveys. Drone operations must also comply with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 where image capture involves personal data.
Depending on the complexity of the operation and site constraints, a spotter may also be required to support the pilot by monitoring surroundings, identifying hazards and helping maintain safe operations.
